Fit notes
Fit Notes came into use on the 6th April – these will be given to staff to prevent them from long term sickness; GP’s will now be able to state the type of work that would be suitable for the staff member until they are fully fit for their normal work.
Statutory Maternity Pay
Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) Increased from £123.06 to £124.88
Paternity Leave for Fathers
Working Fathers are able to take up to 26 weeks paternity leave if the mother of the child goes back to work after the first 6 months and transfers the further 6 months to the father, allowing a ‘sharing’ of the maternity leave. This will give fathers the statutory right to take 3 months leave paid and three months unpaid if the mother decides to return to work after the first 6 months.
Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP) £124.88 from 4 April
They'll be entitled to SPP if they have average earnings at least equal to the NICs Lower Earnings Limit (LEL) - £97 a week or £421 a month for 2010-11. Two weeks Paternity leave can be taken within the first 52 days of the child’s birth however, this must be taken in a ‘block’ and not in ‘odd days’.
New National Insurance and PAYE Service
HMRC have recently introduced a new National Insurance and PAYE Service which they are using to issue tax coding notices for the first time. The transition to the new system has brought to light some discrepancies in their existing records and this is resulting in a number of incorrect Coding Notices being issued. If you or a member of staff think that they have been given the wrong coding they can check it out by ringing the number on their coding notice or by calling this number 0845 3000 627.
