Managing staff will be one of the biggest challenges of your role, but if done correctly, they will also be your greatest asset. Effective staff management will have an impact on your staff turn over, the quality of your setting and the relationship that you have with your service users. To aid you in this role you will need to have clear guidelines in place, both for you and your staff team. Having policies and procedures in place, shows that you are committed to your workforce and that you are taking seriously your ‘duty of care’ toward your staff, to ensure that their workplace is free from any conflict and they are ‘free’ to get on with their role. You are also showing those members of staff who may show inappropriate conduct, that you will not tolerate any behavior that impacts on the workplace and staff well being.
Any disputes or grievances should be dealt with quickly before they have the chance to impact on staff performance and subsequently business performance. However, formal procedures are not the only way to overcome any disputes. Informal procedures, talking to the staff and putting remedial measures in place if needed, may resolve the issue. Communication is key, staff must be aware of who they can talk to if they have an issue and Managers should be adequately trained in order to deal with such requests.
